The two-storey summer house will be constructed on a plot with three facades on two streets and a public staircase with an inclination of 20%, in the neighborhood of Vrodado in Ermoupoli at the island of Syros. The plot's orientation is to the south-east and the view includes the port of Syros, the church of Agios Nikolaos and the islands Delos and Mykonos in the background.
The client’s demands were clear from the start: an open-air space that would make the most of the magnificent view and adaptability of the design to accommodate the maximum amount of guests. The architectural choices were further dictated by our desire to integrate the house into the urban landscape of Vrodado, which is consisted of small two-storey houses of varying chronologies and typologies, and the limitations on morphology set by the building law.
A cube of maximum volume and measurements of 9m x 8m x 7,5m is placed on the plot. Two volumes are extracted from the cube's body to achieve long views and to host summer activities. These courtyards offer benefits of sun, air and privacy equivalent to atriums of larger scale buildings. In addition a transition from the inner private space to the outdoor one and subsequently to outdoor public space is achieved. The main volume is further perforated by openings of specific proportions (1/2,5 , 1/2 , 2/3). These openings become larger at the entrance points and the points oriented towards the view.
The summer house extends in two levels. The bedrooms are located on the first level and the living area on the second. The proposed layout enables the possible and problem-free cohabitation of multiple residents in a small space. Entrance to the house is possible from both levels with gradual advancement from public space to a private open space and finally to the inner private space.
