Black Edges is a new architectural proposal for the renovation of a small apartment tailor made to the new owner’s needs. He had two demands: 1. To make the rooms as bright as possible and 2. To use wood in any furniture that would be designed. These two wishes as well as a particularly small budget defined the architectural proposal.
The flat had all the characteristics of 1970s design. There were 7 rooms in 45m2: 3 halls, 2 rooms of equal size, a kitchen and a bathroom. Even though it faces south, the multiple dividing walls created dark and uninviting spaces.
Our main choices were: 1. To create one big space. 2. To move the bedroom at the back of the flat where the kitchen was located; the room is dark but is further away from the noise of the road.
A piece of furniture that combines all the main functions of the house was central in organizing the open plan space that was created after the removal of three walls. The kitchen, the storage room, the wardrobe, the bookcase and the elevated bed were combined in one device, while the rest of the space was left free for living.
The black edges emphasize the changes, underlining the new structure that unfolds in the three-dimensional space.
